Creative Testing for Paid Advertising
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
How should you test ad creative?
Test ad creative with a written hypothesis, one major variable at a time, enough spend to read the result, and a rule for what happens to winners and losers. Testing is not launching twenty near-duplicates into one ad set and declaring a favorite after a day. On Meta, hooks and formats are typical variables. On Google Search, headlines and descriptions are. On both, the destination should stay still unless the test is the page.
Write the hypothesis in a sentence
‘Proof-led hooks will produce a better cost per qualified lead than offer-led hooks on prospecting.’ If you cannot write that sentence, you are decorating, not testing.
Isolate variables
Same offer, same audience, different hook — that is a creative test. New hook plus new landing page plus new audience is a smoothie. You will not know what to scale.
Spend and time rules
Set a minimum spend or conversion count before you call a loser. Protect a small test budget so always-on winners are not starved — and so tests cannot blow the month.
Promote and iterate
Winners go into the always-on set or get new cuts. Losers get archived with a note. The note matters: otherwise you will reshoot the same failed idea next quarter.
Google’s version
RSA asset reporting, pinned versus unpinned, and landing-page experiments. Do not import Meta’s ‘hook test’ language into Search without translation.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use a 50/50 split everywhere?+−
Even splits are for true experiments. Meta’s delivery may not split evenly inside one ad set. Structure the test so the platform cannot hide the loser inside a winner’s delivery if you need a clean read.
How many tests at once?+−
As many as you can actually conclude. Three honest tests beat twelve forgotten ones.
What if nothing wins?+−
The offer or the page may be the constraint. More creative will not invent demand for a weak product.
