How to Write Better Ad Hooks
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
How do you write a better ad hook?
Write a better ad hook by being specific about who it is for, what changes, and why they should care in the first line or first frame. Cut slogans, slow intros, and questions nobody would ask out loud. Test several hooks on the same offer; the hook is usually the variable that moves CTR, not a new color grade.
Specific beats clever
‘We care about your smile’ is not a hook. A time, a price condition, a mistake, or a named outcome is. If the line could fit any competitor in the city, it is branding, not a hook.
Visual hooks and verbal hooks
On Reels the visual is the hook: a result, a mess, a demonstration. On Search the first headline is the hook: it must echo the query. Do not recycle one sentence across both without translation.
Patterns that earn a test
Call out the person (‘For office managers who…’), name the failed alternative, show the end state first, or lead with a constrained offer. Patterns are starting points. Copying a viral hook from another industry often feels like a costume.
Hype and policy
Health, finance, and weight-loss claims have rules. A hook that gets the ad rejected is not a better hook. Write the strongest honest line inside the policy.
How to test without chaos
Change the hook, keep the offer and destination. Retire losers after a spend rule. Do not test twelve hooks with twelve landing pages in the same week if you cannot read the result.
Frequently asked questions
Should hooks be questions?+−
They can be, if the question is one the buyer actually has. Rhetorical fluff (‘Want more success?’) is invisible.
How long can a hook be?+−
Short enough to land before the swipe. On Search, headlines have character limits — use them; do not empty-calorie brand the first slot.
Can I hook with a price?+−
Yes if the price is real on the destination. Bait prices that vanish on the page train people to bounce and platforms to send you more bargain hunters.
