How to Write Meta Ad Copy
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
How do you write effective Meta ad copy?
Write Meta ad copy as a continuation of the visual hook: primary text earns the click with a specific offer and proof; the headline restates the action; the destination must keep the promise. Lead with the point, not the company name. Use line breaks for mobile. Avoid personal-attribute phrasing that Meta may reject. Write several variants that differ in angle, not only in adjectives.
Primary text is the conversation
Assume sound is off and the image already spoke. The first line should still make sense in the truncated preview. Put the offer before the origin story. Founders love paragraphs; feeds do not.
Headlines are not taglines
Use the headline for the offer, the constraint, or the CTA. Save the motto for the Page. If the headline and the first line of primary text say the same vague thing, you wasted a slot.
Match the creative
If the video is a testimonial, the copy should not switch to a 40% off shout. Mixed messages look like a broken landing page even before the click.
Policy-aware language
Do not call out personal characteristics (‘Are you struggling with…’ in sensitive categories) in ways that violate ad policies. Write to the situation and the offer. When in doubt, be less creepy, more specific about the service.
Variants with a point
One version proof-led, one offer-led, one process-led. That is a test. Three versions that all start with ‘Introducing’ is not.
Frequently asked questions
How long should primary text be?+−
Long enough to complete the offer and a proof point. Some accounts win with short; some need more for high consideration. Test length as a hypothesis, not as a religion.
Should I use emojis?+−
Only if they match the brand and do not wreck scannability. They are not a performance secret.
Do hashtags help paid ads?+−
Usually they waste characters on paid social. Save them for organic if you use them at all.
