Meta Ads ROAS: What It Means
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
What does ROAS mean in Meta Ads?
ROAS in Meta Ads is conversion value attributed by Meta divided by spend. It is a platform ratio, not a profit calculation. It ignores refunds, COGS, management fees, and often uses Meta’s view of which sales ‘count.’ Ecommerce teams can use it as a directional lever; lead-gen teams should not force a ROAS story onto form fills with no revenue event.
Value must be real
If purchase value is missing or hardcoded, ROAS is decoration. Pass accurate value through pixel and Conversions API. Subscription businesses need a rule for what value means on day one versus lifetime — and should not pretend Meta sees LTV.
ROAS is not ROI
ROI usually includes costs beyond media. A 3x ROAS can still lose money after product cost and returns. A 1.5x ROAS can be fine if margin is high and payback is fast. Know the break-even ROAS for your economics.
Lead gen and ROAS
Unless you pass offline conversion values, Meta ROAS for lead campaigns is often empty or misleading. Report cost per qualified lead and close rate instead of inventing revenue in the ads platform.
Attribution still sits underneath
View-through and click-through settings change ROAS. So does comparing Meta ROAS to Google ROAS as if they shared a brain. Use each platform’s ROAS inside that platform, and a blended number in your own books.
Frequently asked questions
What ROAS should I target?+−
Target the break-even-plus-profit number from your margins and payback window. Anyone quoting a universal ‘4x is good’ is not looking at your P&L.
Why is Meta ROAS higher than Shopify?+−
Attribution windows and view-through credit. Treat Meta as optimistic unless proven otherwise. Reconcile to the store.
Should I bid for ROAS?+−
Value optimization can make sense with clean purchase values and enough volume. It is not a switch that creates margin. Junk values in, junk delivery out.
