How to Structure an Advertising Testing Program
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
How do you structure an advertising testing program?
Structure an advertising testing program as a backlog of hypotheses, a small dedicated budget or clearly marked test campaigns, isolation of variables, pre-written success rules, and a log of outcomes. Always-on campaigns keep the business running. Tests earn their way in. A program without a log will retest the same idea forever and call it culture.
Backlog over brainstorm
Anyone can suggest a test. The program ranks by potential impact and ease. ‘New blue button’ loses to ‘new hook for the highest-volume offer.’ Review the backlog on a cadence, not in Slack panic.
Mark the money
If tests live inside always-on without labels, you will never know what you paid to learn. Separate campaigns or naming prefixes. Cap the test slice so it cannot eat the month.
Design for a decision
Each test should have a decision: promote, iterate, kill. If the design cannot produce a decision, it is a vibe. Change one major variable.
Share results with the people who ship
Creative and web teams need the log. Otherwise they keep producing the losing format. Testing is a company process, not an Ads Manager hobby.
Adedon’s version
Done With You is a natural home for installing this program with your team. Done For You still keeps a test slice unless you explicitly want only caretaker spend. We will not ‘test’ by quietly turning on every Google recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
How many tests per month?+−
As many as you can conclude. One concluded test beats five abandoned ones.
Should tests use a different bid strategy?+−
Only if that is the variable. Changing bidding and creative together muddies the read.
What about incrementality tests?+−
Geo splits and holdouts are real tests and need more design. Do not call a before/after screenshot incrementality.
