Advertising Campaign Reporting Explained
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
What should advertising campaign reporting look like?
Advertising campaign reporting should state spend, the outcomes you agreed to count, whether those outcomes were any good, what changed in the account, and what you recommend next — with a clear line between observed facts and inference. A screenshot of platform ROAS is not a report. A report that cannot be read by a sales lead is not finished.
Facts, then interpretation
Spend, impressions, clicks, conversions as defined, CRM-qualified counts if you have them. Then what we think it means. Mixing them into one spicy paragraph is how reports become arguments.
Changes are part of the story
If you launched three ads and paused two keywords, say so. Otherwise every fluctuation looks like weather. Change logs make reporting honest.
Channel chapters, one ending
Meta and Google can have their own sections. The ending should be blended and operational: one list of asks. Two agencies sending two PDFs with no ending is how founders live in Slack.
Cadence and audience
Weekly operational notes for the marketer; a cleaner monthly for leadership. Same numbers, different altitude. Adedon writes both when the package includes reporting. The OS will eventually help; it is coming soon, not a live reporting product pitch.
Frequently asked questions
Should reports include every metric?+−
No. Include the ones tied to the job plus a few diagnostics. Metric dumps are how important lines get ignored.
Is a Looker dashboard a report?+−
It is a tool. A report is a narrative with decisions. Dashboards without a meeting still need a written read at some cadence.
Who is the report for?+−
Name them. A founder, a CMO, and a media buyer need different density. One PDF trying to be all three usually fails the founder.
