Meta or Google Ads for Ecommerce
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
Should ecommerce brands use Meta Ads or Google Ads?
Ecommerce brands typically need Google for people searching product names and categories (Shopping, Search, often Performance Max) and Meta for prospecting creative, retargeting, and catalog ads. Neither platform’s ROAS is the P&L. Feed quality, landing speed, and offer (shipping, returns, price) constrain both. The usual failure is running only the platform the founder likes, or scaling the one with prettier last-click ROAS.
Feeds are a shared backbone
Product titles, prices, and availability that lie will break Google Shopping and Meta catalogs. Feed hygiene is ecommerce media operations, not an IT afterthought.
Google harvests; Meta introduces
Category and SKU searches are Google’s home field. Cold creative that makes someone want the product is Meta’s. Retargeting exists on both and should not triple-message the same purchaser without exclusions.
New customer metrics
If you only optimize blended ROAS, both platforms will find existing customers. Use new-customer goals or reporting splits when growth is the job.
Creative versus SKU ads
Catalog ads are not a brand story. Lifestyle and UGC still matter on Meta. On Google, titles and images in the feed are the ad more often than a custom video.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run ecommerce on Meta only?+−
You can. You will miss high-intent searches, including your own brand if you do not defend it on Google. Some DTC brands still start Meta-first when search demand is thin.
Is Performance Max enough without Meta?+−
Sometimes for harvest-heavy brands with strong feeds. It will not replace Instagram storytelling. Watch brand cannibalization.
What should I optimize to?+−
Purchase value with accurate revenue, plus a break-even ROAS from margin. Do not optimize to add-to-cart forever.
