Google Ads for Local Businesses
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
How should local businesses use Google Ads?
Local businesses should use Google Ads to show up when people search the service plus location intent, and to defend their name. Set location targeting to where you actually serve, use location and call assets that are true, and send traffic to pages that name the city and the service. Google Ads is not the same product as the map pack or Local Services Ads. Profile hygiene still matters even if you buy Search.
Service-area honesty
If you will not drive to a town, do not bid there. Presence targeting versus location of interest can change who sees you. Get this right before you scale.
The ad must sound local
Headlines should include the service and, when it fits, the city the query used. A national-sounding RSA on a ‘near me’ query feels like a lead mill.
Calls, forms, and hours
If the conversion is a call, answer the phone. After-hours campaigns need voicemail or messaging that still converts. Track call quality if spam is high.
Do not skip the profile
Categories, photos, reviews, and hours on your Business Profile affect how people complete the journey after the ad. Ads managers who refuse to look at the profile are missing half of local.
Frequently asked questions
Should every local business run Google Ads?+−
If the queries exist and the economics work. Some niches have little search volume. Then Meta or other demand creation may come first.
Is a website required?+−
You can run call-only in some cases. A page that proves you exist still helps Quality and trust. Many locals under-invest here.
How tight should keywords be?+−
Tight enough that RSAs can match. ‘Cheap,’ ‘jobs,’ and DIY queries need negatives. Local accounts die from messy broad match more often than from too few keywords.
