Meta Ads CPM: What It Means
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
What does CPM mean in Meta Ads?
CPM in Meta Ads is cost per thousand impressions. It is the price of showing the ad, not the price of a click or a sale. CPM moves with audience competition, placement mix, ad quality, and seasonality. A high CPM can be acceptable if conversion value is high; a low CPM can still lose money if nobody converts.
Impressions are not people
Frequency means the same people can drive many impressions. CPM falling while frequency explodes is not a gift — you may be cheaper at annoying a small pool. Read unique reach when the question is ‘how many humans.’
Placement mix changes CPM
Stories, Reels, Feed, and Audience Network do not cost the same. An Advantage placement mix can lower blended CPM by adding cheap inventory that your creative was never built for. Inspect placement breakdowns before celebrating a cheaper thousand views.
Quality and relevance still show up in price
Ads people hide, report, or ignore can become more expensive to deliver. Comments full of complaints are a CPM and a brand problem. Creative hygiene is cost control.
Seasonality is real and unhelpful to deny
Retail peaks and election-adjacent periods can lift CPMs in ways your landing page did not cause. Compare to your own baseline in similar periods, not to a January screenshot.
Frequently asked questions
Should I optimize for lowest CPM?+−
Only if the job is cheap reach. Sales and lead campaigns should accept a higher CPM when those impressions convert.
Why is retargeting CPM high?+−
Small, valuable pools are competitive and frequency-constrained. High CPM on a tiny audience is a signal to cap spend, not always to broaden into irrelevance.
Does video inflating thruPlay change CPM meaning?+−
ThruPlay is a different metric. CPM remains impression-based. Do not mix video view costs with impression costs in one sentence without labels.
