Meta Ads Targeting Explained
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
How does Meta Ads targeting work?
Meta Ads targeting still lets you constrain location, age, language, and exclusions, and it can use custom and lookalike-style audiences when you have data. Detailed interest stacks matter less than they did when the graph was more advertiser-directed. In practice, targeting is a set of guardrails; creative, offer, and conversion events do more of the work of finding people who convert.
Guardrails versus hunting
Geo, language, and age are guardrails: do not show ads to people you will not serve. Hunting — stacking twenty interests — often shrinks delivery without improving quality. Broad targeting with strong creative can outperform a clever interest nest, especially when event data is healthy.
Custom audiences and exclusions
Upload or sync customer lists, site visitors, and engagers when policy and privacy tools allow. Exclude buyers from acquisition campaigns. Retargeting is targeting too: it is the audience with the strongest prior signal, not a magic setting.
Lookalikes and value-based audiences
Seed quality determines lookalike quality. A lookalike of all site visitors is a different tool than a lookalike of high-value customers. If the seed is messy, the expansion will be messy. Do not treat lookalikes as a substitute for a clear offer.
Advantage targeting expansions
Meta may expand beyond your detailed targeting when it predicts better outcomes. Read the settings you actually enabled. If expansion is on, your interest list is a suggestion, not a fence. Management means knowing which fences are real.
What to brief an operator
Give locations you serve, languages, who must never see the ad (employees, existing customers when relevant), and any legal restrictions (health, housing, employment, finance). That brief is more useful than a list of hobbies copied from a competitor.
Frequently asked questions
Should I still use interest targeting?+−
You can, as a starting bias or for thin-data accounts. Do not expect 2016-style precision. Test interests against a broader control when spend allows.
Why is my audience definition so small?+−
Stacked AND conditions and tiny geos shrink the pool until Meta cannot deliver. Loosen constraints or raise budget before assuming the auction is ‘broken.’
Can I target competitors’ customers?+−
You cannot reliably target ‘people who buy from X.’ You can use interests, lookalikes, and creative that speaks to people considering an alternative. Stay inside ad policies.
Does targeting replace a landing page?+−
No. The wrong page will waste even a perfect audience. Targeting and destination are a pair.
