CTR vs CPC vs CPA
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
What is the difference between CTR, CPC, and CPA?
CTR is clicks per impression — a relevance and hook diagnostic. CPC is cost per click — an auction price for attention. CPA is cost per action — spend divided by the conversions you count. They form a chain: ads that get clicks (CTR) at a price (CPC) that then convert at a rate that produces CPA. Improving CTR or CPC without watching the action is how accounts look ‘efficient’ on the wrong step.
The chain in one line
Spend buys impressions. Some impressions become clicks. Some clicks become actions. CTR and CPC live in the first hops. CPA lives at the end (as defined). You cannot manage the chain from one hop.
When CTR deserves the meeting
Creative tests, fatigue, and Search relevance. If CTR falls at rising frequency, talk creative. If CTR is high and CPA is worse, talk landing page and offer — the hook may be lying.
When CPC deserves the meeting
Auction pressure, Quality Score/landing issues, placement mix. Cheap CPC plus collapsing conversion rate is a warning, not a win.
CPA is the decision metric for most lead and sales campaigns
Still name the action. Still pair with quality. CTR and CPC explain CPA; they do not replace it.
Frequently asked questions
Can CPA improve if CPC got worse?+−
Yes, if conversion rate rose more than CPC. That is often better traffic. Do not panic at CPC in isolation.
Is CPM in this family?+−
CPM is cost per thousand impressions, one step earlier than CPC. Useful for reach and placement mix. Same rule: do not optimize it as the goal of a conversion campaign.
Which should a founder watch?+−
Spend, CPA (named), and quality. Ask for CTR/CPC only when the operator says they explain a change.
