How to Know When an Ad Is Underperforming
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
How do you know if an ad is underperforming?
An ad is underperforming when, compared with its job and a fair baseline, it spends enough to judge and still fails the conversion or quality bar — or shows fatigue signals (frequency up, CTR down, comments sour) after it used to work. A new ad with few impressions is not underperforming; it is unread. A brand Search ad with a higher CPC than last week is not underperforming if it still captures your name cheaply relative to non-brand.
Define the job and the baseline
Prospecting ads should not be judged on retargeting CPA. New hooks should not be judged on the old winner’s first-week miracle. Write the comparison class before you call a loser.
Use a spend or conversion threshold
Without a threshold, you will pause ads that never had a chance. With only a threshold and no quality view, you will keep cheap junk. Pair them.
Leading versus lagging
CTR and hook-rate are leading. CPA and qualified rate lag, especially with delayed sales. Do not kill a lead-gen ad on 24-hour CPA if sales closes on a two-week cycle — unless lead quality is already visibly junk.
Fatigue is a kind of underperformance
Yesterday’s winner can become today’s tax. Underperformance includes decay, not only ads that never worked.
Frequently asked questions
Should I pause the highest CPC ad?+−
Not if it converts. CPC is not the scoreboard for sales campaigns.
What if all ads look bad?+−
The constraint is probably the offer, tracking, or auction — not a missing fifteenth variation. Stop rotating deck chairs.
Do platform ‘ad strength’ labels mean underperformance?+−
No. They are completeness hints. Ignore them as a kill rule.
