When Should You Pause an Ad?
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
When should you pause an ad?
Pause an ad when it is disapproved or points at a broken destination, when it has spent a pre-agreed amount without the result you defined, when fatigue or comments make continued delivery reckless, or when it violates policy or brand safety. Do not pause because of a single quiet day, because you are bored, or because a dashboard turned red overnight on low volume. Pausing is a decision with a reason you could explain to a colleague.
Immediate pauses
Broken links, legal risk, comment crises, tracking outages that make optimization meaningless. These are stop-the-line events. Continuing to spend is not loyalty to the test.
Performance pauses
Write the rule before the campaign launches: spend X with zero conversions, or cost per qualified lead above Y after Z conversions. Rules prevent both panic and denial.
Fatigue pauses
High frequency plus collapsing CTR plus sour comments: pause or rotate. Keeping a toxic comment thread live is a brand decision, not a CPA decision.
Pausing too early
Learning phases and delayed conversions need patience. If you pause everything that has not converted by lunch, you will only ever run retargeting and brand.
After the pause
Note why. Decide whether to iterate the idea or bury it. Unexplained pauses make next month’s tests repeat this month’s failures. Adedon logs this in the operating notes; you still approve structural money moves.
Frequently asked questions
Should I pause the whole campaign or one ad?+−
Pause the unit that is broken. One offensive creative is not a reason to kill a converting campaign. A dead pixel may be a reason to pause spend until it is fixed.
What about automated pause rules?+−
Use them for disasters, with caps so a reporting glitch cannot pause everything. Review rules. Do not let them scale spend up on their own.
Can I unpause later?+−
Yes, with a reason (new season, fixed page). Unpausing a fatigued ad without a new hook usually resumes the decay.
