Google Ads Match Types Explained
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
What are Google Ads match types?
Match types control how closely a search query must relate to your keyword before the ad can enter the auction. Exact match is the tightest (still including close variants). Phrase match requires the meaning to include your phrase. Broad match lets Google match to related searches using other signals, including conversion data. Match types are eligibility rules, not a quality guarantee — negatives and ads still do the filtering.
Exact match is not a prison
Exact match includes close variants: misspellings, same meaning, reordered words in many cases. It is tighter than phrase and broad, not a 2012 freeze-frame. Use it when the query cluster is valuable and you want control.
Phrase match is the workhorse for many service accounts
Phrase covers queries that include the meaning of your keyword. It still leaks. Read search terms. Phrase plus a negative list is a standard, defensible build.
Broad match is a data-fed net
Broad uses the keyword as a signal among others, especially when smart bidding and conversion volume exist. It can find converting queries you would not have listed. It can also spend on nonsense if tracking is wrong or negatives are thin. Broad without conversion integrity is a common expensive experiment.
Do not mix match types as decoration
Duplicate keywords in all three match types inside one ad group create internal competition and messy search term attribution. If you duplicate, do it across campaigns with a reason (control vs harvest), not as a habit.
How Adedon chooses
We start from the tightness the account can operate: phrase/exact for new lead-gen with weak data, broader only when the primary conversion is trustworthy. You will see the match-type logic in structure, not as a slogan.
Frequently asked questions
Did Google kill exact match?+−
Google expanded what exact can match. Exact still exists and is still tighter than phrase or broad. Anyone saying ‘match types are dead’ is skipping the search terms report.
Should I use broad match with Maximize Conversions?+−
That pairing is Google’s preferred story. It can work with clean conversions and active negatives. It is not mandatory on week one of a new account.
Why did phrase match show a query that seems unrelated?+−
Meaning-based matching and variants. If it keeps happening, negative it and tighten the keyword or ad group theme.
