Google Ads Quality Score Explained
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
What is Quality Score in Google Ads?
Quality Score is Google’s 1–10 diagnostic for a keyword, built from expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing-page experience. It influences Ad Rank and can change what you pay. It is a clue, not a KPI you ‘hack’ with a tool. Improve the match between query, ad, and page; the score often follows. The reverse — chasing 10/10 while the page cannot convert — is a hobby.
Three components, three different jobs
Expected CTR is historical and predicted clickiness for that keyword. Ad relevance is whether the ad’s message fits. Landing-page experience is usefulness, speed, and transparency. A 4/10 on landing page is a website problem even if ads are clever.
Quality Score is at keyword level
A campaign can look fine while one junk keyword drags costs. Look at the components in the keyword table. Do not average Quality Score into a single account grade for a slide.
How it shows up in money
Higher quality can yield better Ad Rank at the same bid, or the same rank at a lower CPC. That is why relevance work is cost control. It is also why irrelevant broad queries that still click can look cheap until you read conversion rate.
What not to do
Do not rewrite ads hourly to tick the score. Do not stuff the keyword into every headline if it makes the ad unreadable. Do not buy a ‘Quality Score tool’ as a substitute for search terms and page speed.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Quality Score empty on a new keyword?+−
Google needs impressions. No score yet is normal. Do not pause a keyword solely because the column is blank on day one.
Can I have a high Quality Score and a terrible CPA?+−
Yes. People can click a relevant ad and bounce from a weak offer. Quality Score is not a profit metric.
Does Performance Max have Quality Score?+−
Not in the same keyword-column way. You still have creative and landing quality, just less of that diagnostic grid.
