Google Demand Gen Explained
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
What is Google Demand Gen?
Demand Gen is a Google Ads campaign type built for visually rich discovery inventory — notably YouTube, Discover, and Gmail — rather than keyword Search. It is closer to paid social in job: you interrupt or inspire, you do not harvest a typed query. It needs creative made for those surfaces and conversion goals that can survive a colder click. It is not a rename of Performance Max, and it is not a substitute for Search if people already ask for you by name or category.
Discovery inventory has a different job
People on YouTube and Discover are not in a search box. Creative has to earn the click with a hook and a clear offer. Text-only thinking from Search will underperform. If you cannot produce images and video, Demand Gen is the wrong first campaign type.
Audiences and lookalikes, not keywords
You will use audience segments, customer lists, and optimized targeting more than match types. That makes tracking and exclusions important: do not hammer existing customers with an acquisition offer unless that is the brief.
Goals still train the system
If you optimize to cheap clicks, you will get cheap curiosity. If you optimize to a lead event sales hates, you will get more of that. Demand Gen does not fix a vague offer.
How it sits next to Performance Max
PMax can also take discovery inventory. Running both without a hypothesis duplicates spend and muddies learning. Pick a home for discovery or split by creative line with reporting that can tell them apart.
When Adedon recommends Demand Gen
When Search is healthy, creative exists, and you need upper-funnel reach inside Google’s properties rather than only Meta. We will not turn it on to satisfy an optimization score. You approve the budget.
Frequently asked questions
Is Demand Gen the new YouTube campaign?+−
It absorbs a lot of visual demand generation that used to live in other campaign types. Dedicated video campaigns can still exist depending on the goal. Ask which inventory you are buying.
Will Demand Gen replace Meta?+−
It competes for attention, not for identical targeting. Many advertisers run both. Compare qualified cost, not which UI feels newer.
Can B2B use Demand Gen?+−
Yes if the creative speaks to a role and the conversion is a meaningful step. A generic stock-video lead magnet will buy the same junk Demand Gen can find anywhere.
