Google Search Ads Explained

How do Google Search ads work?
Google Search ads are text ads that can appear when someone searches on Google (and partner sites, if you allow them). You bid on keywords; Google matches queries; Ad Rank decides placement; you pay when someone clicks (typical). Search is the intent channel: the person asked. Management is matching that ask with the ad and the page, and excluding the queries that only look similar.
Keywords are eligibility, queries are reality
You choose keywords and match types. Users type queries, including ones you did not list. The search terms report is the truth of Search. Accounts that never open it are not running Search; they are funding a mystery.
Responsive search ads are combinations
You provide headlines and descriptions; Google mixes them. Pinning everything defeats the format. Pinning nothing can produce odd combos. Pin the legal and the offer; let the rest test.
Brand versus non-brand
People searching your name convert differently than people searching the category. Mixing them in one campaign hides whether you are buying demand or harvesting it. Split when spend and politics require a clean story.
Network settings matter
Search partners and Display expansion can leak budget into inventory you did not think you bought. If the brief was ‘Google Search,’ confirm the campaign is not quietly broader.
Search versus PMax search clicks
Performance Max can also serve on Search. If both run, you need a reporting approach so you do not congratulate two campaigns for one branded click. This is a management issue, not a UI curiosity.
Frequently asked questions
Are Search ads only the blue links?+−
They are the classic text results, including sitelinks and other assets. Shopping and map packs are different inventory. Know which you are buying.
Do Search ads work on mobile maps?+−
Local campaigns and location assets interact with maps. A standard Search campaign is not automatically a Maps strategy.
Why is my ad not showing?+−
Ad Rank, budget, status, keyword eligibility, location, and policy can all suppress. Use the ads preview and diagnosis tools rather than raising bids blindly.
