How Google Ads Work

How do Google Ads work?
Google Ads work by running auctions when eligible queries or inventory appear. Ad Rank — bid, quality, and context — decides if you show and where. You pay based on the auction and your bidding setup, often less than your max. Campaign types (Search, Performance Max, Demand Gen, Display, Video) change where the auction happens and which assets you must supply. Tracking tells Google which outcomes to optimize toward.
The auction is query- or inventory-triggered
On Search, a person types (or speaks) something. Google finds eligible ads, computes Ad Rank, and shows winners. On other surfaces, eligibility comes from audiences, feeds, and Google’s models. ‘How Google Ads work’ is not one machine — it is several inventory types sharing an account.
Quality is not a vanity score only
Expected click-through rate, ad relevance, and landing-page experience influence costs and eligibility on Search. They are diagnostics. Chasing a Quality Score number without fixing the page or the query match is superstition.
You do not always pay your bid
Auction dynamics mean actual CPC can sit below a manual max CPC. Smart bidding sets bids per auction from predicted conversion value. Understanding that difference prevents panic when you see bids that look ‘too high’ in the UI.
Conversion tracking closes the loop
Without conversions, automated bidding has little to learn and your reports are click theater. How the system works in 2026 still depends on a primary conversion that matches money or qualified pipeline.
Why Search and Performance Max feel different
Search gives you query visibility. Performance Max hides more of the path and asks you to trust asset groups and goals. Both can work; they require different monitoring habits. Mixing them without brand exclusions or reporting splits is how people conclude ‘Google is broken.’
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Ads only for people who search?+−
Search is the intent product. YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps inventory exist through other campaign types. Do not buy those by accident inside a poorly configured Performance Max if you needed Search.
Why did I show up for a weird query?+−
Broad match, close variants, Performance Max search inventory, or missing negatives. The search terms report (where available) is how you find out.
Do I need a lot of keywords?+−
Not in the 10,000-keyword sense. You need coverage of intent, tight themes, and negatives. Modern accounts are often smaller and better themed than legacy builds.
