How to Set Up a Meta Ads Campaign
By Adedon · Updated 2026-08-14
How do you set up a Meta Ads campaign the right way?
Set up a Meta Ads campaign by confirming Business Manager ownership and conversion events first, then choosing an objective that matches the action you can fulfill, then constraining the ad set (geo, budget, placements, audience exclusions), then attaching creative built for the placements Meta will use. Launch is not the finish: the first week is for delivery checks, event quality, and comments — not for rewriting the account daily.
Before you open the campaign builder
Confirm the ad account, Facebook Page, Instagram account, and pixel (plus Conversions API if you have it) sit in a Business Manager the company owns. Test events with Meta’s tools. A campaign built on a broken purchase or lead event will spend confidently in the wrong direction.
Choose the objective from the business action
If sales can take the lead, use a lead or conversion objective tied to that event. If the site cannot track, fix tracking or use an on-platform lead form with a plan to follow up fast. Do not pick traffic because it feels safer; cheap clicks are not a strategy.
Ad set constraints that prevent obvious waste
Set location, age, and language to match who you will serve. Exclude existing customers when the offer is acquisition. Start with a budget you can afford to read for several days. Optional placement restrictions belong here only if creative cannot run in Stories or Reels.
Ads: primary text, headlines, and destinations
Each ad needs a destination that matches the promise in the creative. UTM parameters should be consistent so reports outside Meta still make sense. Upload multiple creative variations so you are not betting the campaign on one image.
The first-week checklist
Check that events fire, ads are approved, spend is actually delivering, and comments are not turning the ad into a complaint wall. Do not rebuild targeting on day two unless delivery is clearly broken. Adedon can run this setup as Done For You or walk through it with your team as Done With You.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use a campaign budget or ad set budgets?+−
Campaign budget can help Meta shift spend toward ad sets that are delivering the objective. Ad set budgets are useful when you must protect a minimum on a specific audience or offer. Pick one logic and do not mix them without a reason.
How many ads should I launch with?+−
Enough to give the system distinct creative angles — typically a handful of real variations, not twenty near-duplicates. Volume without difference is noise.
Can I skip the pixel and use lead forms only?+−
You can, if your team can follow up those leads. You still need quality control: required questions, CRM handling, and a view of cost per qualified lead, not only cost per form fill.
